WRITES is a new charity (October 2025) set up in the wake of the education restrictions imposed on girls and women in Afghanistan in 2020. The charity raises funds to provide full scholarships/grants to young women in Afghanistan to enable them to complete their higher education in Scotland and other countries, where relevant.

Many of the young women in Afghanistan are distraught by educational and other restrictions now imposed on them.   They will not be prevented from achieving their goal of obtaining a degree and employment so have commenced online English language courses and are now at the level required for university and student visa purposes.

The Scottish Government in 2024 amended the Education Fees legislation to enable young women from Afghanistan, who met certain criteria, to complete their higher education in Scotland.   We at WRITES want to support a small group of young women to do so.  Once we have secured funding to enable them to complete a degree, we aim to finance others who do not fit the Scotland education criteria, to complete their degrees abroad.
